Water and Magnets

Water and Magnets – What Happens When You Combine Them?

When you combine water and magnets you produce magnetic or magnetized water. Magnetic water is water that is simply being affected by magnetic fields. Although water is diamagnetic, the water does not become magnetic in the normal sense and is not in direct contact with the magnets. If you would like to know how we came upon this amazing technology, please read Our Magnetic Water Story.

How does magnetic water work?

Your water typically comes to your home by a copper water pipe. As the water in your cold water line passes through a magnetic field, there are a number of physical changes happening with the water.

  1. Changes the calcium calcite into calcium aragonite which is a mineral that flows through, doesn’t stick to things and prevents hard water build up.
  2. Ionization – more alkaline with pH value between 7.6 and 9.2.
  3. Lowers the surface tension of water from 75 dynes to 38 dynes due to microcluster.
  4. Creates Microcluster – magnetized water has only 6 molecules per water cluster compared with regular water having 14 to 30 molecules. This makes the microcluster easier to pass through cell membranes. It also increases metabolism because it is easier to transport nutrients and oxygen to cells and to carry out toxins and waste matter from the cells.
  5. Antioxidant – Some of the hydroxyl ions combine together and become water and oxygen ions. These oxygen ions can stop the free radical cycle because they are negatively charged ions.
  6. Have more oxygen – when some oxygen ions combine together and become oxygen, this oxygen can dissolve immediately in that water. It is said that, “Water which has an alkaline property, always has oxygen inside.” This added oxygen gives energy to the cells, prevents development of anaerobic bacteria and stops their growth.

These physical changes, however, are temporary and will last between 48 and 72 hours. This should not be an issue in your home, unless you are going on vacation and will resume when you return.

  • No salt or potassium bags to purchase or carry or haul into your car
  • No added salt taste to water means no added filter to buy to remove salt

You may be thinking, all these benefits sound too good to be true. Well, there are actually scientific studies to back all this up. Also, think about how water plays a role in our lives – in almost everything. For us, the proof was in our positive experience with using the magnetic water.

Also, don’t expect to see most of these benefits happen right away. We recommend using it for at least a month or two. Because of the hard water buildup that needs to be removed, the age of your water pipes, hot water heater, and appliances will determine the speed with which you will experience the benefits of magnetized water. The older the age, the longer it will take, and vice-versa. In our case, we have a 47-year-old home, a 6-year-old dishwasher, and a 1-year-old water heater and we saw some benefits within a few days and got better with time.

Can magnets soften water?

You may be thinking, are the magnets removing the hard water minerals from the water like a typical salt-based water softener, and if so, where do the minerals go?

The magnets do not remove the minerals but instead transform the calcium calcite into calcium aragonite which doesn’t stick to anything and flows through. Some people will test the hardness of their water before and after the magnets are installed and say that their water is still hard. That’s no surprise since we are not saying it removes the minerals from the water. Rather, the magnets condition the water which is similar to a salt-free water conditioner but with much more benefits at a much lower cost, zero maintenance, and doesn’t require electricity.

You may experience seeing some minor calcium aragonite residue on items like faucets and shower doors but the residue is easily wiped off with a cloth or your finger. This is normal and is a much better alternative to the hard water buildup.

The main reason you buy a water softener is to eliminate hard water buildup. Using magnets will achieve the same result but even better because it is also a descaler along with the other benefits.

Will this work on well water?

Although we don’t have well water to test this on, we have seen reviews from people who have stated that they are very satisfied with the results of using magnets on their well with very hard water. With well water that has a lot more minerals, you may need more or stronger magnets to work more effectively.

Can I use these magnets with my existing water softener or conditioner?

Yes, you can. We would suggest placing the magnets after your current water softener or conditioner to get the most effect. You could also place additional magnets at the very beginning of your water line to descale and protect it.

Will I still get health benefits even if I don’t have hard water?

Yes! There are studies using reverse osmosis (RO) water with magnets that have shown the health benefits of magnetic water. This does not mean you need to have RO or soft water to get these health and other benefits.

Why don’t we already know about magnetic water?

The short answer is to follow the money. The companies that make those expensive water softeners and conditioners and appliance companies don’t want you to know about these magnets because it would mean fewer sales for them. The companies that provide salt or potassium chloride for the water softeners would also be affected. This is just basic economics. The effects of magnets on water have actually been around for over 200 years – History.

What is my risk for trying these magnets?

Virtually none. There is no big commitment in cost, equipment, or installation. Because the magnets are easily installed, they are just as easily removed. So if you try it for a couple of months or whatever the refund time frame is, you can easily return them or use them for other things. With their very low cost and simple installation, it is a very low-risk tryout with so many amazing benefits to gain.

We are so very glad that we didn’t pay attention to some negative reviews that said this doesn’t work. Instead, we tried it for ourselves to find out. What we found has amazed us with all the incredible benefits that we have experienced thus far. You can read more about this in Our Magnetic Water Story.

What type of magnets are they and how much do they cost?

The magnets are neodymium magnets or neo magnets for short, the strongest magnets on earth that were developed in the early 1980s. They are permanent magnets and will last forever.

After researching what magnet options are available, we have narrowed it down to 2 types of magnets. They are both neodymium magnets and have a similar pull strength of around 33 lbs. with a rating of approximately 13,200 Gauss and are both coated so they will not rust when installed outdoors. Since these magnets are very strong, keep them away from computers, memory cards, cameras, etc. In addition, there are no maintenance or installation costs if you choose to install it yourself.

This first option is for the DIY (do it yourself) crowd and is the least expensive. These Neodymium Bar Magnets come with 3M double-sided sticky tape that makes installation quite easy. This comes with 4 magnets so that you can use 2 for the incoming water pipe and the other 2 for the outgoing hot water pipe from your hot water heater or give the second pair to your relative, friend, or neighbor. We found out that after using it for a couple of months, we only need 2 magnets on the cold water line even with our very hard water of 17.5 gpg. These magnets are quite strong and can cause pinching of fingers so they require special handling. They are brittle and could break if the magnets were to come together suddenly or be taken apart the wrong way. Please use goggles or eye protection when handling and read the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Here are the instructions for installing the DIY bar magnets – Magnetic Water Installation

The second option are magnets from Magnetic Water Technology which are made with a special housing to make installation really easy. The housing also helps protect the magnet from breaking so it is safer to handle. You purchase these in pairs so if you want to have it for both your cold water and hot water pipes, you would need to purchase 2 pairs. Keep in mind, the second pair of magnets for the hot water pipes would be optional. You could purchase the first pair and see if that fills your need and if so, then you’re done. If not, you may want to try and add a second pair on the hot water side. If you have very hard water or well water, see below for more powerful magnets.
